Organized Darts : Tournaments & Leagues

Naturally, when you're starting you will probably not be throwing in any kind of organized competition. However, later you may want to compete.

There are essentially two kinds of organized competitive darts. In tournaments players pay an entry fee in order to compete for money. In most tournaments, you are given a partner in a blind-draw, so you’ll usually have a different partner each tournament. You may draw the best player in the pub, or the worst. Some tournaments (mostly the larger ones designed for the most serious players) have variations such as singles, bring-your-own-partner, triples, etc. All Sharky's tournaments are blind-draw.

The other type of darts is league. In league play you and several friends (four, six, or eight per team is common) form a team, and each week you play against another team. Roughly half of your games will be at your home bar, and the other half will be at another bar against the team playing out of that pub. At the end of the season, winners get plaques, and the pub gets a "team plaque" to put up on their wall. It’s common for the pubs to pay all of the league fee’s associated with a team.

League darts are usually broken up into different levels of play, so the hot players play against other hot players, and lower level players play against lower level players. For this reason, league is usually the best place for people to start playing competitive darts. All you need is a few friends, and you can put together a team. Sharky's would be very glad to host your league team.

There are variations on this, of course. Some pubs run in-house dart leagues, for instance, so that you always play at your home pub. Some leagues are "money leagues" where you pay an entry fee each night, and can win money at the end of the season.
